During a root canal procedure, we gently numb your tooth to prevent any pain during the appointment. The Endodontist will access the nerve chambers and remove the nerve tissues inside. Our Endodontist uses a dental microscope to thoroughly oversee the cleaning inside of each canal. Next, the tooth is filled to seal out any new bacteria. The overall process typically requires one appointment, followed by a dental crown.
The dentist will first start by taking an image of your tooth root through an x-ray to determine the root structure, extent of the infection and if there are any signs of infection surrounding the bones. The x-ray is the most crucial diagnosis that will dictate the kind of work to be undertaken by the dentist. The endodontist will then numb the area around the affected tooth.
After the local anaesthesia, the endodontist will place a dental dam over the affected tooth so as to isolate it from the other teeth. After the tooth is dry and free from saliva, the dentist will drill a hole into the tooth to remove any dead and diseased pulp tissue. This process is not painful since the area has already been numb and the nerve tissue is already dead or dying. After completely removing all the decayed nerves, the dentist will then clean up and disinfect it.
Once the root has been thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and properly shaped, the dentist will now either permanently or temporary seal it. Some dentist may choose to place a temporary seal for about five to seven days so that they can monitor if there is any possible infection that was left behind.
The primary materials used as sealers during the sealing process are gutta-percha and a sealer paste. The dentist will fill the exterior part of the drilled hole with a filler. If there is not enough tooth structure left to hold the filling, your endodontist may put a strong plastic inside your canal to help hold the filling in position.
