Treat Early with Myobrace - Alternative to Braces for Kids

Did you know that 75% of children have crowded teeth and incorrectly developing jaws? These problems can be seen from as early on as 3-5 years of age. At MyoSmile Polyclinic, we strive to provide our patients with the latest treatments for airway positioning, pediatric sleep apnea, and sleep disordered breathing.

Teeth do not become crooked by chance and the most up-to-date evidence reveals most orthodontic problems are the result of incorrect jaw development. This restricted development limits the space available for erupting teeth and prevents them from erupting into their ideal natural position. Myobrace fundamentally delivers airway and habit correction to resolve orthodontic problems, and can either treat or prevent symptoms associated with Sleep Disordered Breathing and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

What is Myobrace?

Myobrace is an innovative myofunctional orthodontic treatment system designed to address the underlying causes of crooked teeth and poor oral habits in kids aged 3-15. Unlike traditional orthodontic approaches that focus solely on aligning teeth through braces or aligners, Myobrace takes a more holistic approach. It aims to correct the poor oral habits that contribute to misaligned teeth and jaws, providing a more comprehensive solution to orthodontic issues. Receiving early treatment offers the best results and lifelong benefits to both dental and overall health, but older teens and adults can also experience the benefits of airway orthodontics.

Myobrace represents a shift towards addressing orthodontic issues by focusing on the root causes rather than just the symptoms. Its comprehensive, preventive approach can lead to long-term oral health benefits and a more natural, beautiful smile.

Benefits of Myobrace

The Myobrace system is built on several key principles aimed at rectifying myofunctional habits—like mouth breathing, incorrect tongue positions, and improper swallowing.

What Myobrace treatment does:

How does it do this? By helping the child:

How Does it Work?

The Myobrace system uses a series of removable appliances that are worn for a few hours each day and overnight while sleeping. These appliances are made of soft, flexible material that gently applies pressure to the teeth and jaws, encouraging them to grow in the correct position, and help train the tongue and facial muscles to function properly. Take a look at some of before and after Myobrace cases below.

Stage 1: Habit Correction

In the first stage, Myobrace teaches children to breathe through their noses instead of their mouths. This change is crucial for healthy dental and facial development.

Stage 2: Arch Development

As children grow, Myobrace works to expand the dental arch. This ensures there is enough room for incoming teeth, which reduces crowding and misalignment.

Stage 3: Dental Alignment (teens only)

At this stage, the focus shifts to naturally aligning the teeth as the child’s permanent teeth appear.

Stage 4: Retention

The final stage emphasises keeping up the healthy habits developed during treatment to ensure long-term results and stability.

Signs and Symptoms

In the last few decades, dental practitioners have seen a rapid increase in crooked teeth and improper jaw development. The most common early sign to look for in your child is an open mouth posture, where during rest or sleep the child will have their lips apart.

You might notice this while they are watching TV or on their mobile device. Restless sleep and snoring at night are also symptoms to watch out for. They can not only lead to developmental issues, but are also associated with sleep-related disorders, which can result in behavioral problems and learning difficulties in children. Here are some things to watch out for:

If your child is experiencing breathing problems, sleep apnea, snoring, improper bite, poor sleep or any other reason to believe there might be a myofunctional problem, book a consultation with Dr. Leila Antar, our Pediatric Dentist and Certified Myobrace provider. Let’s find out if it’s right for your child.
